For years I've collected written material I've wanted read aloud: e-books that are out of copyright, conference notes, my own writing, and more. Old text-to-speech models were not tolerable for long-form content, and the new AI voices are genuinely good. Kokoro voices are open, reliable, and professional — good enough to listen to for hours.

There are many other TTS services out there, some with many more features than this one. However, many require subscriptions, have opaque pricing schemes, and only allow you to listen online through their platform. Not all are tailored to the audiobook format. I built EbookAloud as the service I was looking for: as little as $1 per conversion, transparent per-word pricing, no subscription, no account required, and good integration with existing audiobook programs. The speed for each voice has been fine-tuned to match the pacing of professional audiobook narration while maintaining the quality of pronunciation. Text extraction has been thoroughly tested against a wide variety of real-world epub files and other documents to properly generate the table of contents and deliver a seamless experience on par with standard ebook readers.
